The career no one sees

The career no one sees

Something that doesn't get said enough about this industry. There's a proper skill and qualification pathway in it, and almost nobody outside can see it.

Water and multi-utility work isn't unskilled work. The people carrying out this work are trained, qualified and experienced in what they do. You can't simply walk onto a site and start laying mains, making connections or working on live utility infrastructure without the right training, competence and understanding of the job.

There are qualifications to gain, tickets to work towards and practical skills that are built through experience on site. For those who want it, there are different routes the career can take too - but being an operative is a skilled job in its own right.

None of that really shows up in a school careers talk. Most people find the industry by accident, usually through somebody they already know.

Which is a shame, because it's skilled, steady work with a proper structure to it, and it's an industry that needs young people coming through and learning the job.

If that sounds like something you'd want to do, we'd rather hear from you than not. No promises on vacancies - it depends what's on at the time - but you can apply through our website
